13.4.9 Between the Ropes


Entre Cuerdas, a prominent Cuban guitar orchestra founded in 2008 in the province of Villa Clara. It is a musical project belonging to the Cuban Institute of Music and sponsored by the renowned maestro Jesús Ortega. It is directed by guitarist Danys Martínez.

The orchestra’s roster is made up of ten instrumentalists who graduated from high school arts schools. Its instrumental format includes six guitars, three requintos, and a bass. The repertoire they showcase in each of their performances includes works by Cuban and foreign composers, as well as pieces written by members of the orchestra.

Entre Cuerdas typically performs on the first Saturday of each month at the City Hall. They also offer concerts in every municipality in the province.

In March 2009, this orchestra performed at the Rodrigo Prats Music Museum in Villa del Undoso as part of the activities organized by the Provincial Music Center. It showcased a varied repertoire of popular and classical pieces, specifically Baroque works, Latin American music, and pieces from the Cuban song movement known as Nueva Trova.

During the 14th National Chamber Music Festival “A tempo con Caturla” (A Tempo with Caturla), in 2010, Entre Cuerdas performed a concert at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Santa Clara. On that occasion, they performed a repertoire that showcased works by Antonio Vivaldi, Latin American pieces, and Cuban composers. Among the latter were Tres danzas (Three Dances), Son de la loma (Sound of the Hill), and Lágrimas negras (Black Tears).

The following year, they performed again at the 15th edition of the A Tempo National Chamber Music Festival with Caturla, where they gave a concert.
