13.7.3 Luna Vocal Ensemble


Ensemble Vocal Luna, a female choral group, was founded on September 1, 2002, by Sonia Silvia McCormack Bequer. It is currently conducted by Sandra Santos González. This Cuban choral group is made up of more than ten professional singers, graduates of the secondary and advanced levels of Cuban music education.

Vocal Luna’s repertoire is very diverse, including works by numerous composers, styles, and genres of music. It is divided into five groups: Cuban Music, Early Music, Romantic Music, Contemporary Music, Contemporary Sacred Music, and Christmas. They perform works by Cuban composers such as Guido López Gavilán and Leo Brouwer, as well as young composers such as Waldo Díaz and Daniel Fernández.

In 2003, the group participated in the UN Conference held in Havana. In 2010, the group performed the opening concert of the fifth edition of the May Renaissance event at the Church of San Francisco de Paula (Avenida del Puerto and San Ignacio, Old Havana, Havana). On this occasion, they presented works by English and Italian composers Thomas Morley, Tomás Luis de Victoria, Giovanni Gabrieli, Luca Marenzio, and Pierre Certon.

Since its creation, it has participated in various festivals that have taken place in the Cuban musical scene, such as the International Choir Festival in Santiago de Cuba, the Esteban Salas International Festival of Early Music, the Corhabana International Festival, the Huella de España Festival, and the International Festival of Contemporary Music.

They have also taken their music to international events, including the International Festival in Ecuador “El Canto Hermana a los Pueblos,” the International D’Canto Competition in Margarita Island, Venezuela, and the Habaneras and Polyphonies Competition in Spain and Havana.

Ensemble Vocal Luna has shared the stage with important Cuban and foreign groups such as Exaudi, the Ars Longa Early Music Ensemble, the Cuban National Choir, the Schola Cantorum Coralina, the Camerata Romeu, and the National Symphony Orchestra. It has also featured groups from nations such as Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela, Germany, Moldova, Russia, Italy, and Spain.

They have performed symphonic-choral works such as Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Mahler’s 5th Symphony, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, and Beatriz Corona’s Mass.

As part of this choral group’s work, there are five canturías, which are composed of children and adolescents and directed by the members of Vocal Luna.

Among the awards the Luna Vocal Ensemble has won are the Grand Prize for Habaneras and the award for best performance at the Habaneras and Polyphonies Competition in 2006, and the First Prize and the Popularity Award at the International D’Canto Competition in Margarita Island, Venezuela, in 2007.
