13.7.5 Children’s Songs by the Luna Vocal Ensemble


The Children’s Songs of the Luna Vocal Ensemble were created with the intention of introducing children who were not associated with art schools to music. It is a project comprised of a total of five song groups from different neighborhoods in Havana. The Luna singers themselves are the song groups’ teachers and directors. The group welcomes children from four years old through adolescents in basic secondary school and young people from the Enrique José Varona Pedagogical Institute.

The Lunitas Cantoria was the group that launched this project, founded in September 2007 by Sandra Santos González, who serves as its director. The group is made up of girls between the ages of four and ten.

Young Singers, made up of adolescents between the ages of 14 and 18. Led by Alina Hernández, it includes 25 girls divided into two groups: one for 18 to 25 years old and the other for secondary school students.

The other two cantorias, Jazmín and Jades, under the baton of Yarineidis Llinse, and Niñas Cantoras de Luna, directed by Director Yohana Lazarte, bring together girls between six and ten years old.

The fifth group is led by Maribel Nodarce and is made up of boys between the ages of four and eight. It is called Little Princes.

These groups have performed in different spaces usual for children and in important concert halls, such as the Church of Paula (Ave. Del Puerto and San Ignacio, Old Havana. Havana), the Minor Basilica of the Convent of San Francisco de Asís (Oficios between Amargura and Churruca, Old Havana. Havana), the Amadeo Roldán Auditorium Theater (Rastro Street No. 1, Old Havana. Havana), the San Felipe Neri Oratory (Aguiar corner of Obra Pía, Old Havana. Havana), the National Library of Cuba Theater (Independence Avenue corner of 20 de Mayo. Revolution Square. City of Havana), among others.
