13.7.6 National Children’s Choir

The National Children’s Choir, founded by maestro Digna Guerra, has received support from other professionals in the project, including Delfina Acay, Yaíma Fariñas, Isis Castillo, Greta Gomis, and Bismarck Estupiñán.

This group emerged within the National Choir of Cuba’s Songs, made up of hundreds of children who, in turn, make up the Children’s Choir and the Youth Choir. Its members are carefully selected as they grow up, within the choir known as “Singing Solecito,” made up of children from two and a half to six years old.

The National Children’s Choir is made up of a select group of children between the ages of six and fourteen. From the age of fourteen, they join the youth choir. In this choir, boys receive careful vocal training, as this is a difficult stage for the voice.

The repertoire performed by this choir includes numerous Latin American and Cuban works, as well as the most representative repertoire of universal music.

In 2009, for two consecutive nights in March, the National Children’s Choir carried the UNICEF flag and performed in a two-hour performance at the Karl Marx Theater (1010 1st Ave., Miramar, Playa, Havana), where they accompanied prominent Cuban musicians such as Kelvis Ochoa, X Alfonso, David Torrens, and Descemer Bueno. This occasion marked the first time that the four musicians shared the same stage. This concert was organized by the UNICEF office and featured artistic direction by the renowned actor Jorge Perugorría.

The National Children’s Choir is a school where members of the Cuban choir’s future are trained and educated.
