13.9 Vocal Ensembles of Cuban Music in the 21st Century (2000-2011).

During this period, vocal groups of diverse formats emerged: duos, trios, quartets and others, which performed Cuban popular music. They are part of a tradition that began to emerge in the mid-20th century and have remained present in Cuban music, harvesting diverse musical genres.
Alma, a Cuban male vocal quartet, was founded in 2001 in the province of Holguín. Their debut took place during the Romerías de Mayo (May Pilgrimages), an artistic event held in Holguín on May 5, 2001, where they performed a concert entitled, Sobre la dulzura del mundo (On the Sweetness of the World).
In 2003, she participated in the Concert Music Festival in her hometown. She gave a concert for Valentine’s Day. In 2006, she received the Cubadisco 2006 Award in the Vocal Music category for her CD Camina Fino.
Their repertoire includes popular music, traditional music, and contemporary Cuban music, as well as classic Latin American songs, spirituals, and American jazz classics. They also include German and English music.
Alma’s music is the result of the fusion of Cuban rhythms with the sounds of American black music, an exquisite treatment of vocals and the use of unisons, dissonances, and augmented and diminished chords.
The Coravila group is still very young, and most of its performances are associated with the essential cultural and social activities that take place in the province of Ciego de Ávila.
Vocal groups in Cuba have gained significant influence thanks to internationally renowned groups such as Vocal Sampling and Vocal LT. However, the group led by Maestro Bustinza boasts enormous human and artistic quality, making it a group worth following in the vocal genre on the island.
Vocal Coravila is a young Cuban vocal group founded in 2009 in the province of Ciego de Ávila. It is comprised of a group of young artists belonging to the Hermanos Saíz Association (AHS).
Nexus Vocal Ensemble, a prominent Cuban vocal group. In 2007, they participated in the Lotto-Quebec World Chant Choral Competition, held in Laval, Canada. At this competition, they won the Gold Medal in the Vocal Ensemble category. They also won the Audience Award.
On that occasion, they performed classic works from the Cuban musical repertoire, including Son al Son, El Guayaboso, El Manisero, and Guajira Guantanamera. They also performed Vientos de Mambo, marking the world premiere of this work composed by group member Evelyn Ramón.
