13.10 Outstanding Instrumentalists of Cuban Music in the 21st Century (2000-2011).

In this stage of Cuban music of the 21st century (2000-2011), several instrumentalists stand out, among which we can mention: Rolando Luna, Harold López-Nussa, Marcos Madrigal, Leonardo Gell Fernández–Cueto, Jorge Emilio González Buajasán and Alejandro Calzadilla.
Rolando Luna is a Cuban pianist, arranger, and composer. He stands out for his impeccable way of infusing his works with elements of concert music, Caribbean music, Cuban music, and jazz, a musical genre of which he has proven to be a magnificent exponent.
For his outstanding performance, he has received numerous awards: First Prize at the JoJazz Competition in 1999. In 2007, he was selected for his high level of performance to participate in the 41st Montreux International Jazz Festival. In the Piano Solo Competition, part of the festival’s program, he won the main prize and also the Audience Award.
Harold López-Nussa, a Cuban pianist, was a disciple of Teresita Junco and joined her class of talented children at thirteen. At just ten years old, he won the Amadeo Roldán Prize. He also participated in various events and won other awards, such as first prize in the Ibero-American Piano Competition and was a finalist at the Citta di Senigallia in Italy.
He was chosen to be one of the featured artists performing the Cuban premiere of the complete piano works by composer Héctor Villa-Lobos at the Amadeo Roldán Theater-Auditorium (Calzada y D, Vedado, Plaza de la Revolución, Havana), at the initiative of Ulises Hernández. On this occasion, he performed Piano Concerto No. 4. He won first prize at the 39th Montreux Jazz Piano Competition in Switzerland.
Marcos Madrigal, Cuban pianist; born. Graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte de Cuba (ISA) (Calle 120 No. 1110 between 9th and 13th. Cubanacán. Playa. Havana). He participated in the Third International Citta di Avezzano Piano Competition, at that time giving a recital entitled Afternoon in Havana, at the Bibli Cultural Center in Rome, where he won First Prize, awarded by unanimous decision of the jury.
Leonardo Gell Fernández-Cueto is a Cuban pianist who participated in the Ibero-American Piano Competition in Havana in 2001, where he won a prize. In 2004, he won First Prize in the Amadeo Roldán Piano Competition. The following year, he began his artistic career as a soloist at just 19 years of age, giving numerous concerts not only in major venues and theaters in Cuba but also in countries such as Costa Rica, Argentina, Spain, and Korea.
He has appeared on stage with prominent figures in Cuban music, such as Iván del Prado, Enrique Pérez Mesa, Leo Brower, Alfredo Diez Nieto, Guido López Gavilán, among others. This young pianist appears on the soundtracks of two films: El Premio Flaco, with the Camerata Romeu, and Chamaco, both by director Juan Carlos Cremata. This talented Cuban musician is included in the catalog of the National Center for Concert Music and is a member of the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC).
Yissy García Calzadilla, a young Cuban instrumentalist, graduated in 2006 with outstanding grades in percussion and in November performed at the “JOJAZZ” International Festival of Young Jazz Artists, playing drums with the Big Band of Canada and receiving a Special Mention for Performance.
After graduating, the young and talented percussionist joined the Anacaona all-female orchestra, playing drums, timbale, and bongo drums. With Anacaona, she has toured internationally on several occasions, including a significant one in 2009. In early 2010, she joined singer Cucu Diamantes on her national tour, which led to the filming of a movie in which she also appeared. Despite her young career, Yissy’s talent has provided her with wonderful opportunities to perform with other important Cuban musicians.
Jorge Emilio González Buajasán is a young man who is part of the wealth of Cuban pianists and among his awards we must mention the Second and First Prize for the best musical interpretation in the Amadeo Roldán Competition, held in 2004 and around the same time, the Third Prize in the First Category of the IV Ibero-American Competition of Havana.
In 2010, he won several awards, including the Medal with Commendations at the Lagny-sur-Marne Competition in Paris, unanimously voted by the Jury, and Special First Place at the Flame Competition. He has been invited to the Solo Piano Season and Cuban Music Festivals, among many other prestigious events.
Alejandro Calzadilla is a Cuban clarinetist who served as alternate clarinetist for the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory Symphony Orchestra for four consecutive years, performing with them at various events. He has participated in various festivals, including the Esteban Salas Early Music Festival, the Chamber Music Festival, the 3rd and 4th National Symphony Orchestra Festival, and the Amadeo Roldán Wind Competition, where he won third place.
He has also performed as a soloist in important venues across the country, accompanied by the Música Eterna Chamber Orchestra, the Paulita Concepción Conservatory Youth Orchestra, and the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory Chamber Orchestra.
