13.11.2 Alexander Díaz

Alexander Díaz, a prominent Cuban performer, was born in 1971 in the eastern Cuban province of Guantánamo. He grew up in a musical environment, as his father, Nelson, and his grandfather, Ángel, were faithful exponents of the Cuban songwriting movement known as Feeling. When he was just eight years old, he wrote his first composition. He studied guitar at the National School of Art (120th Street between 9th and 13th Streets, Cubanacán, Playa, Havana), and later graduated from the School of Professional Development.

He has been a member of Cuban orchestras such as Vidrio y Corte, with which he has incorporated his own compositions. He also has work as a vocalist with Isaac Delgado’s orchestra in 1991, Klimax, Bamboleo, and Paulo FG’s orchestra.

In 2005, he participated in the recording project Tres días de Feeling, where he shared with artists such as Pablo Milanés, Beatriz Márquez, and Chucho Valdés.

In early February 2011, Alexander presented songs from his most recent album, which was made in Mexico and recorded by Bis Music, at the National Theater (Paseo and 39th Street, Vedado, Plaza de la Revolución, Havana).

On that occasion, he also performed songs that reflect the strides he’s taken throughout his career. Among the songs that echoed his melodious voice are: En el malecón (On the Malecón); Palabras (Words), sung with his father; Déjate caer (Let Yourself Fall), with saxophonist César López; Dame más (Dame More), with David Torrens; Lobos de la misma cacería (Wolves of the Same Hunt), a reggaeton song with his nephew Michel Delgado; Boleros entre dos (Boleros Between Two), accompanied by his daughter Alejandra; and a duet with Polito Ibáñez.

Alexander Díaz’s repertoire showcases various musical genres, including Feeling, Son, and current genres.
