13.11.8 Jackeline Velázquez (Jackeline Vell)

Jackeline Velázquez, popularly known as Jackeline Vell, a prominent Cuban singer, was born on September 7, 1978. She graduated from high school in 1999 in her native Holguín province with a degree in choral conducting and advanced singing. She began her professional career with the Holguín provincial choir Orfeón at the Rodrigo Prats opera house until approximately 2001.
During that time, she participated in various national and international events such as festivals, competitions, fairs, and pilgrimages; and she founded Harmony, one of the most important choral groups in the country. She began her career performing in the tourist resort of Guardalavaca and in some of the city’s nightclubs, such as Club Siboney, Casa de la Trova, and Casa Iberoamericana, performing Cuban popular music and gaining increasing attention for the power of her voice and the subtle way she crossed the line between the highbrow and the lowbrow.
On one occasion, when the popular television program “23 y M” moved to the city of parks, Julio César Leal, music video producer and director of the program, and its host, Edith Masola, were impressed by Jackeline Vell’s talent and suggested she perform in the capital, and she accepted the challenge. She arrived in Havana and began as a member of the choir of the Cuban Institute of Radio and Television (ICRT), where her performances earned her praise from important music maestros such as Miguel Patterson and Digna Guerra. She was also a member of the giant choir of the first meeting of Cuban symphony orchestras, conducted by maestro Leo Brower and singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez.
She has shared the stage with figures such as Luis Carbonell, Rosita Fornés, María de los Angeles Santana, and Lourdes Torres, performing various musical genres, including zarzuela, under the direction of maestro Alfonso Menéndez.
Jackeline Vell’s professional acclaim includes participation in concerts and tributes to prominent figures in Cuban music, as well as several editions of the Adolfo Guzmán and OTI competitions. She has appeared on various radio and television programs and toured throughout the country, earning recognition such as an award at the Adolfo Guzmán Competition and a mention at the JoJazz festival, an event chaired by Chucho Valdés. Experts have considered her one of the finest exponents of contemporary Cuban music.
The young artist, currently working as a soloist, is beginning to make her mark in the world of Cuban pop/rock with a distinctly personal style. She recorded her first CD, “Mírame,” in 2009 with the Bis Music label, featuring a brilliant interpretation of 10 tracks, which range from pop to ballads. Her music videos have turned songs like “Se me olvida,” “Nada,” “Génesis,” and “Gente Auténtica” into true hits, the latter containing a meaningful social message for those living with HIV/AIDS.
Her voice has been featured in television programs such as the children’s series La Isla de los Cocos and the adventure series Los Tres Villalobos, as well as in small productions by students from the San Antonio de los Baños International Film School. She was selected to participate in the soundtrack of the Cuban film “Los Dioses Rotos” and had the honor of being chosen by the Cuban star to perform a zarzuela alongside her as part of a DVD, in which Rosita Fornés selected her as the only female performer.
Jackeline Vell has toured extensively internationally, combining genres as diverse as bolero, pop, and Cuban guaracha, to name a few. During these tours, she has had the opportunity to participate in Cuban shows where she has performed with popular Cuban artists such as Vania and Osdalgia, bringing the excellence of her voice, which harmoniously blends the lyrical and the popular, to European and Latin American countries such as Mexico.
