Vania Borges, a Cuban singer on the current Cuban music scene, received piano lessons and studied oboe as a child. In 1990, after completing her musical training, she joined the Matanzas Symphony Orchestra. Upon returning to Havana, she was asked to join the female vocal group Dacapo. With this group, Vania toured internationally, to countries such as France, Japan, and Mexico.

He then worked with the renowned Cuban orchestra Pachito Alonso y sus Kini Kini; and from there he joined Bamboleo as a singer. He remained with that group for a period of ten years.

In 2001, she performed the song “Who Told You?” at the OTI (National Association of Latin American and Caribbean Music) competition, composed by fellow singer Osdalgia Lesmes. The song was a finalist in the competition. At the 2002 Adolfo Guzmán Cuban Popular Music Competition, she performed the song “What Do I Do with the Song?”, in which Vania’s song won the Popularity Award. By then, she had already launched her solo career, featuring on the album “Cuba le canta a Serrat,” released by RP Music/Random, and recording a song with Shakira for an album dedicated to the tsunami victims.

Vania released her self-titled album in December 2006, marking her debut studio album. On it, she covered Spanish musician Alejandro Sanz, including the songs that made him popular. The versions were performed in a bolero style with Latin jazz touches. The album features twelve songs from Sanz’s work, including Amiga mía, Cuando nadie me ve, and Eso. It features contributions from artists such as Tata Güines, Rolando Luna, and Frank Rubio.

In 2009, she performed at the Encanto cinema-theater in Baracoa in the show Amémonos, in which she was accompanied by bolero singer Rafael Espín and comedian Carmen Ruiz. That same year, she won the California Song Festival, where she performed German Nogueira’s song “Disfrútame.”

In August 2010, she performed at the 7th Literary Crusade in the province of Camagüey. There, she was one of the performers participating in a show promoting the album, La rumba del siglo, by the Camagüey-based group Rumbatá.

In June 2011, Vania Borges, a Cuban exponent of bolero music, attended the 23rd International Bolero Gathering in Santiago, an event sponsored by the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) and the Miguel Matamoros Provincial Music Center.

Vania has won national awards and, in addition to her recordings with Bamboleo, has also appeared on albums in Buena Vista’s Rhythms del Mundo collection.

Vania Borges is currently pursuing a brilliant solo career, a feat that has allowed her excellent vocal qualities to flourish. She is considered by critics and audiences alike to be one of the most important female singers in contemporary Cuban music.
