Pupy y los que Son Son, a Cuban popular dance music group founded in 2001 by prominent musician César Pedroso (Pupy). Their debut took place in the municipality of Güines on October 4, 2001.
Musicians who were still studying at the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) (Calle 120 No. 1110 e/ 9na y 13. Cubanacán. Playa. Havana), and others from various Cuban orchestras, were the members who made up the roster of Pupy and those who Son Son.
Among the founders of the group we can mention: Armando Mandy Cantero (vocalist), Gerardo Miró (violin), Rafael Paseiro (bass), Roelvis Reyes (drums), René Suárez (pailas), Jorge El Toro Castillo (tumbadoras), Julio Noroña (son) (güiro), Osiris Martínez (keyboard), Leonardo Teruel and Juan Carlos Borrero (trumpets) and Sergio Luna and Andrés El paisa Fernández (trombones).
The orchestra was supported by percussionist José Luis Quintana (Changuito), who served as the main advisor and provided the entire rhythmic foundation for the songs, in addition to the support of Chucho Valdés.
The instrumental format of Pupy y los que Son Son is conceived on the basis of a mixture of various instruments, since it retains the violin and the pailas of the Charanga, adds the trumpets with Conjunto treatment and also includes the trombones characteristic of the modalities derived from the Jazz band.
The repertoire of Los que Son Son includes numerous songs whose themes refer to romantic relationships and to women as the main figures within them. They also feature lyrics that display themes of social content, in which we find typical characters from the Cuban social sphere, such as the boastful, the gossip, and the town crier.
Among the songs performed by this orchestra are: The neighbor moved, The cat threatens but does not scratch, The voluminous one, Women are, Let’s enjoy ourselves even outside, Does it bother you that I’m happy and Play it.
Within nine months of the group’s formation, they had already performed successfully both in Cuba and abroad and had shared the stage with world-renowned music figures such as Bradford Marsalis and Lauryn Hill at the St. Lucia Jazz Festival, where they also joined Chucho Valdés and his jazz quartet. During this same period, they toured the neighborhoods of Cuba, concluding with a concert at La Piragua.
In November 2008, Pupy y los que Son Son launched their album, Tranquilo, que yo controlo, at the Astral cinema-theater. The album was recorded under the Cuban label EGREM. The presentation featured prominent figures in Cuban music, such as Teresa García Caturla, Changuito, Haila, and Ángel Bonne.
In 2009, they toured Europe, introducing audiences to a new generation of singers. In 2010, Pupy y los que Son Son performed at SOB’s nightclub in New York City, where they received critical acclaim. Guest appearances included prominent percussionists such as Marc Quiñones, Ralph Irizarry, and Bobby Allende.
Among the awards this Cuban popular dance music group has garnered, the prize for best album of 2008, which they received in France, stands out.
