13.20.6 Ariel Barreiros Rouco

Ariel Barreiros Rouco, a prominent Cuban singer-songwriter from Aguada de Pasajeros, has been a member of the Hermanos Saíz Association since 1990 and has been recognized as a National Project of the organization since 2001.

That same year, he traveled to Facatativa, Colombia, to participate as a guest at the Street Theater Festival; he was part of the [email protected] anthology and participated in the tour organized for the festival.

In 2004, he was selected to join the artistic brigade that celebrated New Year’s Eve with Cuban collaborators in Venezuela. A year later, Ariel traveled to Venezuela as part of the artistic delegation for the Youth and Students Festival.

He has performed at numerous venues in various Cuban provinces, where he has given concerts as part of national tours such as La Estrella de Cuba, organized by the Cuban Book Institute to commemorate the bicentennial of José María Heredia’s birth; Trovanonim@; and the 2006 concert organized by the Pablo de la Torriente Brau Center, A guitarra limpia, where he shared the stage with Cienfuegos troubadour Yunior Navarrete. He has also taken his music to the Dolores Hall (Aguilera and Reloj Streets, Santiago de Cuba) in Santiago de Cuba and the Amadeo Roldan Theater (Calzada and D, Vedado, Plaza de la Revolución, Havana).

Ariel Barreiros has also participated in other events that have taken place within the sphere of Cuban music and culture, such as the Romerías de Mayo (Holguín), Longina (Santa Clara), Al sur de mi mochila (Cienfuegos), and the Political Song Festival (Guantánamo).

Ariel Barreiros was chosen to participate in the tributes held in Bolivia on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Ernesto Ché Guevara’s assassination in La Higuera. He later traveled to Guatemala as part of a brigade of poets and troubadours to share with our collaborators there.

He has shared the stage with the most important Cuban troubadours of his generation, as well as with other national and international artists.

As a composer, Ariel Barreiros Rouco has written more than 150 songs. The lyrics of his songs, which exhibit great expressive richness, pose a reconfiguration of the Cuban troubadour scene. His lyrics tell stories of love.

Barreiros has left his mark on several of the most representative anthological productions featuring young Cuban troubadours, including [email protected] (2001); La Estrella de Cuba, conceived by the Cuban label EGREM; and Una canción para Pablo, dedicated to the anniversary of Pablo de la Torriente Brau’s death in combat.

Among his recordings, we can mention his album Medio lento, released on the EGREM label, which was released during the celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the founding of Nueva Trova.

Among the awards Ariel Barreiros Rouco has collected is a special mention for his participation in the contest for a song for Frida and Diego. At the event, the CD titled “Sur” was launched. This is nothing more than a concert produced by the Pablo de la Torriente Center, “A guitarra limpia” (A clean guitar), performed in collaboration with Yunior Navarrete.
