13.20.9 Yaima Orozco

Yaima Orozco, a prominent Cuban singer-songwriter, was born in the province of Villa Clara. Since childhood, she had a strong artistic interest, which she pursued through dance, voice-overs, and theater, although her true passion was singing.
She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education and achieved Elementary Level singing at the School of Cultural Development in Villa Clara. Her beginnings in the artistic world began very early; guided by her Music Education teacher, Raúl Cabrera, she joined the amateur music artist movement and participated in festivals organized by the José Martí Pioneers Organization and the FEEM (Federal Education Federation). Later, during her university studies, she joined the institution’s Artistic Brigade, with which she participated in the FEU Festivals, earning several Gold Diplomas.
In 2002, she was part of a female traditional Cuban music group as a vocalist when she auditioned and was approved as a member of the Hermanos Saíz Association (AHS). Two years later, Yaima Orozco began performing as a backing vocalist in various venues of the well-known “descarga” (dance) of the La Trovuntivitis movement, which has its main venue at the El Mejunje cultural promotion center. There, surrounded by such a creative environment, her passion for the Trova genre grew, and she decided to compose her own songs. In 2005, she joined the movement, joining the ACDAM that same year.
Their songs are characterized by different genres such as bolero, traditional Cuban song, son, balaba, and pop, which are enjoyed by the audience at each of their performances.
Between 2006 and 2007 he participated in several national festivals such as Trova Viva in Moa, Trova Ilesa in Camaguey, the Pinar del Rio Trova Festival, the Longina Festival in Santa Clara, Al Sur de mi Mochila in Cienfuegos, and the Miguel Companioni Trova Festival at the Sancti Spíritus Music Center, all organized by the AHS.
He has given concerts in numerous venues in his home province, as well as in other cultural centers around the country, including the Casa del Joven Creador in Cienfuegos, the Pablo de la Torriente Brau Center, and the Casa de las Américas (3rd and G Streets, Vedado, Plaza de la Revolución, Havana). He has also performed in important promotional venues such as the Peña de Inti Santana at the ICAIC Cultural Center, Fresa y Chocolate (23rd Street between 10th and 12th Streets, Vedado, Plaza de la Revolución, Havana) and at the Gardens of the Cuban Institute of Music (452, corner of 15th Street and F Street, Vedado, Plaza de la Revolución, Havana). He has also appeared on various Telecubanán television programs such as Rompiendo la Tarde (Rompiendo la Tarde), Esto es Música (This is Music), and Buenas Nuevas (Good News), as well as on the Perla Visión program in Cienfuegos, in its program Tardes de Jagua (Jagua Afternoons).
In 2009, Yaima Orozco participated in the prestigious BarnaSants Festival in Barcelona, Spain, alongside fellow countryman, troubadour Diego Gutiérrez. The performance was warmly received by the audience, who demonstrated a deep understanding of Cuban trova music. She has also toured other Latin American countries and Argentina.
The young performer and composer, already considered one of the most prominent exponents of the new generation of Trova music in Cuba, is part of the project promoting the songs from the book El diablo Ilustrado, in which she performs the song Como matar un fantasma.
Some of Yaima Orozco’s compositions will be recorded on a compilation album featuring musical production by Pavel Poveda and arrangements by Roland Jorrín. The album will be jointly produced by the AHS and EGREM. Pianist and composer Pucho López recently approached her about recording an album. The project is currently underway and could be her debut album.
