13.21.1 Cubaton, a subgenre of Reggaeton popularized in Cuba in the 20th century (2000-2011).

Cubaton is considered a subgenre of Reggaeton, also known as Reggaeton a lo Cubano and Timba-Reggaeton. It is a fusion of Cuban percussion, Salsa, Timba, and Reggaeton.

This rhythm, so popular in Cuba, emerged as a result of the proliferation of the Reggaeton musical genre among Cuban youth. It was primarily driven by the blending of typical Cuban music rhythms with imported sounds from Reggaeton and Rap, produced by Cuba’s leading reggaeton artists. This contributed to Cubaton developing a unique and distinctive sound.

Currently, talented young soloists and groups are performing this form of music in the Greater Antilles. Worthy of mention are Gente de Zona, Insurrecto, El Chacal, Candyman, Yulien Oviedo and Blad MC, Kola Loka, William Sanchez, El Micha, Los Salvajes, Baby Lores, Osmany García, and many others.
