13.22.2 Leandro Medina Fellové (Insurrecto)

Leandro Medina Fellové, popularly known as Insurrecto, a prominent Cuban reggaeton artist, was born on February 17, 1983, in the Cerro neighborhood of the capital. From a young age, he had a penchant for music, which materialized in the events and morning shows held at his school, where he always sang. He worked for many years as a baker and cook.

In 2000, Leandro Medina embarked on his artistic career as a solo rap artist, making his debut and subsequently performing primarily in clubs. Later, at the Havana International Hip Hop Festival, he performed professionally and began performing under the moniker Insurrecto.

The following year, he joined a rap group that fused different genres of Cuban music, Clave Cuba. He launched his professional career there, working as a director and composer.

Along with Clave Cuba, Insurrecto performed in numerous nightclubs in Cuba, including Macumba Habana (222nd Street and 39th Avenue, La Coronela, Havana), Salón Rosado de la Tropical (41st and 46th Avenue, Playa, Havana), Tropicana (4504 72nd Street, Marianao, Havana), Café Cantante Mi Habana (Paseo and 39th, Vedado, Revolution Square, Havana).

During that period, he shared the stage with important Cuban figures and orchestras such as Adalberto Álvarez y su Son, Jose Luis Cortés y NG la Banda, Paulo FG, Los tres de la Habana, Bamboleo, Juan Formell and Los Van Van.

He joined the group Piel Canela in 2003 and remained there for a year. With that orchestra, he participated in a show presented during a national tour.

Also around that time, he joined the Batanga Sonoc band, a group led by Silvia Acea. Batanga Sonoc was the only orchestra, and also the first, to include rap as part of their signature fusion.

In late 2004, Leandro Medina entered a competition organized by the Hermanos Saíz Association, winning the first grand prize. This award allowed him to launch a solo rap career. Orishas, Obseción, and Eddy-K are some of the Cuban rap groups with whom he shared the stage.

In 2006, Insurrecto decided to dedicate himself to reggaeton. To do so, he formed a duo with the equally famous Baby Lores. Together they performed popular songs that are now known worldwide. Among them are Caperucita, La mujer del pelotero, and Déjala ir. With this duo, Leandro Medina achieved great success both internationally and nationally, becoming one of the most listened to reggaeton artists in Cuba. Había una vez is an album recorded with this duo.

Some time later, they reunited as a trio, now that El Chacal had joined the band. Their album was released in Brazil and Europe.

Currently, El Insurrecto is pursuing a solo career and frequently performs occasional duets with other exponents of the genre. Leandro Medina Fellové is considered one of the most popular Cuban reggaeton artists.
