13.22.5 Michael Sierra Manda (El Micha)

Michael Sierra Manda, popularly known as El Micha, a prominent Cuban reggaeton artist, was born in Havana. He was raised in a very humble environment and also played basketball for years.

According to the artist himself, his environment has been his main source of inspiration when composing his songs: “I talk about what I experience, children, old people, my songs come from the people.” Rhythm is one of the core elements of his music, but what interests him most is the lyrics.

This can be clearly confirmed by Michael Sierra’s own words: “I aspire to make sure that in every home, every car, every place, my husky voice speaks the truth to people, tells them to dance and forget about everything else.” Among his songs that reaffirm his words are “El Barrio Me Puso Aquí” (The Neighborhood Put Me Here) and “En Punta De Pie” (On Pointe).

Micha’s training is entirely empirical: “I know nothing about music, and I don’t want to know,” and adding that “I’ve always had the ability to improvise, maintain a rhythm, a fluidity.”

In 2009, he performed a concert at the Cárdenas Theater (526 Céspedes corner Velásquez, Cárdenas, Matanzas) with Andy Gola’s Colé Colé Group. The performance was held in honor of the forty-seventh anniversary of the UJC and the forty-eighth anniversary of the OPJM, and was aimed primarily at the youth of that town in Matanzas.

In 2010, he released his latest musical production, “Con Dinero Y Pasmao,” which led to a devastating series of shows in Europe, establishing him as one of the most outstanding pillars of the Cubaton scene internationally.

Michael Sierra Manda is a highly prolific Cuban musician. He has collaborated extensively with some of today’s most prominent Cuban reggaeton artists, including the popular group Kola Loka (“Se Extraña”), Baby Lores (“Tú Eres La Mía,” “Yo Soy Cubano”), Insurrecto (“La Ricurita”), and, most recently, Cistychov (“Si Te Vas”). His work has expanded into numerous albums and compilations released worldwide.
