13.29.1 Francis del Río

Francis del Río, a prominent Cuban singer and composer, was born in 1965 in Río Cauto, in the eastern province of Granma.

Francis began his musical career with the Sonoridad Latina orchestra in 1991. A year later, he moved to the Cuban capital and joined the show Timba Suicidal at the Caribe cabaret, performing as a singer under the direction of Santiago Alfonso. Another orchestra where he worked was Calle 42, under the direction of Raimundo Martínez, in 1994. With this orchestra, he toured nationally and visited several cities in Brazil. Later, in 1997, he joined the group Ataché Habana, and with them, he toured several nationally and once in South America.

In the first year of the new millennium, Francis del Río left his musical mark on the discographies of various Cuban musicians, such as Bobby Carcassés, X Alfonso, Roberto Carcassés, and Carlos Alberto Cartaya. Also around this time, Francis performed alongside Descemer Bueno and Pável Urquiza on the album Mambo y compañía.

The following year, he participated in the recordings of the group Free Hole Negro as a guest, in addition to appearing in their performances and in the filming of their music video. In February, he traveled to Mexico, where he starred in a tour. Beginning in 2001, he formed the band Interactivo, where he performed as the lead singer. He collaborated on the group Síntesis’s album, Habana a flor de piel, in 2002. The album was nominated for a Latin Grammy.

His debut album, Sentimiento, conceived under the Unicornio label, was presented to the music market at Cubadisco 2004. A year later, Francis participated in Telmary’s album, A diario.

In March 2010, she and her group performed at the El Sauce Cultural Center (9th Street, between 120th and 130th Streets, Playa). There, they released their third album, Sol, produced by Bis Music (2009). It features twelve tracks, including: Esa niña me salvó (That Girl Saved Me), Hace siete días (Seven Days Ago), Iba (I Was), Los amigos (Friends), and Qué alegría (What Joy).

He was accompanied by instrumentalists such as Elián Oscar Blanco (piano); Rodolfo Torrente (Fito) (guitar); Adrián Argota (trombone); Justo Aboy (bass); Roberto Carcassés, among others. Del Río was responsible for the direction, musical production, recording, mixing, and mastering of this album.

In October 2011, the Yara cinema-theater (Calle L, corner of 23, Vedado, Plaza de la Revolución, Havana) hosted the debut concert of his group Ifa, a group of young and talented Cuban musicians. This new project by Francis de Río showcases a small instrumental format. On that occasion, he performed songs he also sings with the group Interactivo, some of which are included in his CD Goza Pepillo and others from his album Sentimiento.

In his creations, Francis del Río reflects reality, blending his own perspectives with those of others.

Among the numerous awards he has received for his excellent work, we can mention the Grammy Award for Best Latin Album with the group “Los Van Van” (1999); and the Latin Grammy for the song “Dilo Como Yo” (2002).

Francis Del Río is considered one of the foundations of fusion music in Cuba and a defender of contemporary popular music.
