13.30 Yasek Manzano Silva

Yasek Manzano Silva, a prominent Cuban trumpeter and composer, was born in 1980 in the capital’s Marianao municipality. He began his musical studies at the Alejandro García Caturla Conservatory (1110 120th Street between 9th and 13th Streets, Cubanacán, Playa, Havana). Later, in 1995, he entered the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory (1110 Rastro Street, Old Havana, Havana) and that same year began performing at the La Zorra y el Cuervo Club (155 23rd Street, Vedado, Plaza de la Revolución, Havana).

His first international experience came in New York, where shortly after sharing the stage with the prestigious American trumpeter Winston Marsalis, he was offered a prestigious scholarship to the Julliard School. In 1997, Roy Hargrove, a renowned American jazz trumpeter, gave him his first trumpet, and he immediately began playing in various sessions around the city.

In 1998, Yasek Manzano won first place at the JoJazz event in Havana. In 2003, he returned to Cuba and began his professional career by creating his own group. With his new group, he released his first album, for which Roberto Martínez would take much of the credit for his valuable collaboration.

He is considered the most talented trumpet player of his generation. Thanks to all his accolades, he has had the opportunity to play alongside prominent musical figures such as Bobby Carcassés, Celia Cruz, Irakere, Los Van Van, and others.

In 2006, Yasek Manzano represented Cuba during the celebration of Cuban Cultural Day in Italy. A year later, he participated in the Barbados International Jazz Festival and, more recently, in the Dominican Republic Jazz Festival. This time, he was part of the group Irakere under the direction of Maestro Chucho Valdés, with whom he has performed in important concerts in Cuba.

The young trumpeter has frequently received invitations to countries such as Switzerland, Italy, the United States, France, the United Kingdom, and Barbados, among others. Thanks to these invitations, he has been able to gather a wealth of experience given the number of quality artists he has had at his side during these journeys.
