5th Cuban Culture Conference in Digital Media, a prelude to an event

From November 11th to 14th, from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., the 5th Conference on Cuban Culture in Digital Media will be held at the Cuba Pavilion. This event will provide a space for theoretical reflection and the exchange of experiences regarding the application of information and communication technologies in the processes related to the production, dissemination, and access to different branches of culture, particularly in the case of Cuba.

The event will feature a varied program of panels and conferences covering topics such as digital consumption and journalism, as well as music and audiovisual products in digital environments, without neglecting the goal of promoting culture. On the closing day, the 2014 Palma Digital Award will be presented. This award is given to websites or other cultural products from the island of high quality and impact, in various categories, positioned throughout the year.

Cuba’s case is unique in terms of the symbiosis between culture and digital media. We have a rich cultural heritage that has been strengthened in recent decades, thanks to the free tuition at all levels of education and the institutional commitment to promoting the finest artistic and literary values. However, access to new information and communications technologies, particularly to the Internet, is lacking, with no valid short-term solution. Therefore, there is a pressing need to further safeguard the quality of digital cultural products, optimize resources, and identify priorities for safeguarding and promoting our outstanding national heritage.

Our website welcomes this event, now in its fifth year, and continues to strengthen its work promoting Cuban culture, with an inclusive approach open to different perspectives on cultural processes. The vast universe of achievements in art, literature, science, sports, and Cuban society as a whole is not just a click away; however, we do aim to structure a diorama of what is knowable, motivate intellectual pursuits, scientific research, and, above all, the authentic and unprejudiced enjoyment of the finest cultural values of tradition and contemporaneity.
