Cuban humor reaches Europe: exhibition of drawings by Arístides Hernández

At the European Cartoon Center exhibition hall in Kruishoutem, Belgium, 140 humorous drawings by Arístides Hernández, better known as Ares, have been on display since January 24th. The public will be able to enjoy the pieces until March 22nd of this year, at a center where some twenty of the world’s best cartoonists have exhibited. Ares will then travel to France to attend the tribute paid to the Charlie Hebdo cartoonists who were victims of the recent terrorist attack on the humor magazine’s headquarters.

Colloquium in tribute to playwright Abelardo Estorino, in Matanzas

From January 26th to 29th, a colloquium will be held in the province of Matanzas on the life and work of the distinguished playwright, director, and theater critic Abelardo Estorino (1925-2013). This event, organized by the Casa de la Memoria Escénica (House of Scenic Memory) and the Tablas-Alarcos Publishing House, includes a screening of the documentary “Estorino en Matanzas” by Ana Valdés Portillo and a dramatized reading of “The Wizard of Oz” by Teatro de las Estaciones. Participating will be figures associated with the art of the stage, such as playwright Ulises Rodríguez Febles and critic Omar Valiño, as well as prestigious theater groups, including Teatro del Puerto and El Público.

The year of the visual arts, firsts from the Havana Biennial

At a press conference, Jorge Fernández Torres, director of the Wilfredo Lam Contemporary Art Center, announced the celebration of the twelfth Havana Biennial from May 22 to June 22, 2015. With the theme “Between Idea and Experience,” the Biennial aims to integrate cultural institutions and Cuban society as a whole into a diverse array of knowledge that pays tribute to art. The program of activities includes exhibitions by Iván Capote and René Francisco, which will take place at the Galería Habana, as well as commemorations of important anniversaries of artists such as Fidelio Ponce de León, Carlos Enríquez, Fayad Jamís, and Alfredo Sosabravo, among others.
