9.10.4 Septet Espirituano.

Septeto Espirituano, a prominent Cuban group founded on June 10, 1926, in the city of Yayabo, Santi Espíritus. It is currently directed by Juan Hernández Acosta.

Since its inception, this septet has introduced a new variation, the so-called son capetillo. It had a slightly slower tone and was very popular in the area. The Septeto Espirituano’s distinctive characteristic is that its repertoire includes Cuban musical genres such as traditional son, bolero son, guagancó son, and Afro.
A fourth generation of Cuban musicians makes up the septet’s roster; some of whom are not graduates of arts schools in the Cuban archipelago, several have reached the elementary level in musical institutions, and others do have the academic preparation. To this end, they conduct self-improvement workshops.
In this town, a day of homage is being held to the Septeto Espirituano, which has been in existence for eighty-four years.
